Geelong have a strong history against Brisbane, dating back to the Lions inaugural year in the national competition in 1997 after a merger between the Brisbane Bears and Fitzroy Lions.

The Cats did not start well against Brisbane in the early going, losing the first 10 consecutive games between the two sides and 12 of the first 13 clashes up until 2005.

Geelong knocked off the Lions in the opening round of the 2006 season and since then, it has been a relatively dominant stretch for the Cats.

Dating back to that game early in 2006, Geelong have won 24 of their last 29 games against Brisbane including 14 of the last 17 in more recent history.

The Lions last win against Geelong in Victoria came in the 2004 Preliminary Final, when they held on for a nine point victory against a young Cats outfit.

In the Chris Scott coaching era (since 2011), the Cats have won 16 of 20 games against the Lions, Scott’s second highest winning percentage against any team in his tenure.

During that span Scott has squared off against Brisbane coach Chris Fagan 11 times, winning eight of those clashes including two Finals wins (2020, 2022).

For Fagan the 27.27% win rate against the Cats is his lowest winning percentage against any team since taking over in 2017.

The two sides have squared off twice at the MCG, Geelong winning the most recent encounter in the 2022 Preliminary Final (71 points), while Brisbane won the 2004 Preliminary Final (nine points).
