The Geelong’s Football Club’s Honouring the Past Committee has received a heritage award for its work in commemorating two key historical sites.
The places of note are the former home of Charles Brownlow, located at 14 Sydney Avenue in Geelong, and the site of the club’s first home ground, which was known as the Argyle Ground.
Located at 30 Aberdeen St in Geelong West, the Argyle Ground was next to the Argyle Hotel.
The hotel remains there today, although these days it is an outpost of the Irish Murphy’s chain.
The work of the Honouring the Past Committee, which is spearheaded by Cats vice-president Bob Gartland, was recognised as part of the Geelong and Region Branch National Trust Heritage Awards.
“This is a great accolade for us,” Gartland said.
“Our heritage team is a hard working one, and we are very proud that we have been selected in this process.”
