The Geelong Cats in conjunction with Alzheimer's Australia Victoria and with the support of the Geelong Past Players & Officials Association have produced the first Geelong Football Club Reminiscence Book.
Officially launched last Friday, the Reminiscence Book has been produced for use in memory support facilities to encourage discussion and enhance memories relating to Australian Rules football, and Geelong Football Club in particular.
The Geelong Cats are the first sporting organisation in Australia to produce a book specifically for dementia patients and free copies of the book will be distributed to Geelong care facilities over the coming weeks.
The 40 page full-colour book goes back to the 1951 and 1952 Grand Finals and it is hoped these positive memories will spark discussion and improve mood and communication amongst patients.
With sports reminiscence projects operating in Scotland for a number of years, the club’s aim is to develop a similar project here in Geelong for residents in care facilities who have followed their beloved Cats their whole lives.
