Geelong’s VFLW side has suffered defeat in their opening round clash, going down to Melbourne Uni 5.3 (33) to 12.5 (77).
The Cats showed flashes of their potential throughout the match but the Mugars proved to be too strong across four quarters.
It was a ripping contest in the first term and both sides were level on scoring shots with the Cats only five points behind on the scoreboard at the first change.
After the break, the home side played an impressive brand of football, kicking six goals to the Cats’ one across the middle two quarters.
The Cats never gave up and showed fight in the final term to kick two goals, but it proved to be too late for a comeback as Mugars ran out 44-point victors.
The scoreboard may have reflected a heavy loss but there were promising signs for the Cats in the first game of the 2019 campaign.
Maddie Boyd kicked two goals and Jordan Ivey was dangerous all day while Rebecca Webster and Amy McDonald were always in the action.
The match was the first chance for some of the Geelong players to take the field together so the improvement will come as the chemistry grows over the coming weeks.
Bec Goring was a late out for the Cats but coach Natalie Wood will be hoping to have her back for next week’s clash with the Bombers.
The Cats will take on Essendon at Central Reserve in Colac on Saturday.
