With only nine rounds remaining in the home and away season, we look back and reflect on the Cats' performances so far this season.
Today, we focus on rounds six through nine.
Round 6: Geelong 10.9 (69) defeated by Sydney 12.14 (86)
Geelong were in control for the first three quarters as they held a 22-point lead at three quarter time, but a seven-goal last term to Sydney saw them snatch victory. Sydney skipper Josh Kennedy was unstoppable in the last term, with 13 disposals and seven clearances. For Geelong, Mitch Duncan had 24 disposals and seven tackles, while Tom Hawkins had 18 disposals and kicked two goals.
Round 7: Geelong 14.9 (93) defeated GWS 4.8 (32)
Geelong got back on the winners list in round seven, with a 61-point victory over GWS. Geelong kicked five goals to nil in the third term as they ran away with the game after a sloppy first half. Skipper Joel Selwood led from the front with 29 disposals and nine tackles, while Mitch Duncan (33 disposals), Tim Kelly (30 disposals) and Patrick Dangerfield (27 disposals and two goals). Youngster Jack Henry announced himself with 18 disposals and 10 intercepts.
Round 8: Collingwood 5.15 (45) defeated by Geelong 9.12 (66)
The 21-point win over Collingwood wasn’t a pretty one, with just five goals being scored in the first half. Geelong held a 19-point lead at half time and it was just enough to hold on as it was goal for goal in the second half. Tom Stewart was outstanding with 28 disposals and nine marks, while Sam Menegola had 24 disposals and kicked three goals. The win was Geelong’s fifth for the year.
Round 9: Essendon 12.12 (84) defeated Geelong 7.8 (50)
Essendon shocked Geelong with a nine goal to two first half as it set up a 34-point upset over the Cats. Bomber Shaun McKernan was instrumental in the first half, slotting four first half goals to set up the win. Joel Selwood tried hard all day to finish with 30 disposals, while Tom Hawkins kicked three goals to go with his 20 disposals. Patrick Dangerfield (27 disposals), Zach Tuohy (27) and Mitch Duncan (26) were the only other Cats to record more than 20 disposals.
