The Geelong Cats are set to celebrate the club’s Carji Greeves Medal Night – with this year’s medal set to be hotly contested. Here’s the first of three groups of Carji Contenders.
Patrick Dangerfield is an obvious one to watch and will be competing for his third Carji Greeves Medal since joining the Cats in 2016.
The All Australian Vice-Captain is currently ranked the number one player in the AFL player ratings, averaging 28 disposals and one goal per game.
The Schick AFL Player Ratings have shown a drop in Dangerfield’s performance compared to last year after a historically outstanding 2017, as the explosive mid spent more time down forward for the Cats.
Mitch Duncan is another one to watch in the build-up to the clubs best and fairest night.
Runner up in last year’s Carji Greeves Medal, Duncan has built on his performance as one of the league’s best midfielders, averaging 26.6 disposals per game and nearly seven marks.
A hamstring injury early on in the year saw the 27-year-old miss a few games, including the trip to Perth in round three.
In 2018, the versatile midfielder has moved up 22 places to rank 33rd overall in the AFL player ratings.
Tall forward Tom Hawkins is also a contender for the club’s best and fairest award this year.
The past Carji winner has had an outstanding season up forward bagging 58 goals, placing him third in the AFL’s Coleman medal.
Tomahawk booted four goals in round 17 to accompany a Goal of the Year nomination, while 14 goals in two back-to-back matches saw Hawkins very unlucky to miss out on claiming the prestigious Coleman medal.
Hawkins also tallied the third most goal assists for the club.
Tom Stewart has continued to excel and build on the big stage this year putting him as a likely challenger for the Carji Greeves Medal.
Finishing the 2018 home and away season with just 42 AFL games under his belt he was rewarded the league’s best young player.
The All Australian defender has been a key player to Geelong’s successful defence this year, averaging 20 possessions and six marks per game.
However, a left ankle injury throughout the year saw him miss a couple of games for the Cats’ during the home and away season.
