Geelong AFLW recruit Anna Teague says there is something pretty special about coming back home to play her football, although it wasn’t a straight forward decision.

Teague was drafted as a rookie by Melbourne for the 2018 AFLW season and played four games, before accepting an offer to come back home to Kardinia Park.

“I had a marvellous time there (at Melbourne), learnt a lot, developed as a footballer, but you’re right, coming back home, there is something pretty special about it and it’s a nice feeling to be saying I’ll be playing with them (Geelong).” Teague said to K rock Football.

The lure of home was strong enough to draw Teague back to Geelong, however the Geelong local says it wasn't as simple as some would think.

“I think externally it can look like that people might say, definitely these Geelong girls will be coming back,” Teague said.

It was never as simple as that. It was too-ing and fro-ing, it was pros and cons and I still struggled with trying to make the decision and then they ended up saying ‘yep Teaguey, you got to make a decision’.”

“One of the biggest factors for me was the travel. I’ve had some issues with my back in the past and the stadium here being so close to home meant it reduced the travel time.”

Teague was one of the first signings for the AFLW team and was overseas for most of the signing period but kept a close eye on who she would have as teammates in 2019.

“It’s great that you can build a list around local people and then adding value to that list with people of the likes of Mel Hickey, Phoebe McWilliams, Aasta O’Connor, people like that to really drive the leadership and that have experience in the AFLW as well.” Teague said on CatsTV.

Teague will be joined by former Melbourne teammates Mel Hickey and Richelle Cranston at Geelong in 2019, while former Giants Maddie Boyd and Phoebe McWilliams have also signed with the club.
