There was a very special guest at Geelong's Season Launch at Melbourne's Crown Casino on Wednesday night.

Charlie Brownlow IV, the 81-year-old grandson of the man the Brownlow Medal is named after, flew down from Queensland for the occasion.

The main reason for his visit was to be present for the announcement that his grandfather had been elevated to Legend status in the Cats' Hall of Fame.

Brownlow, who is a Geelong member, was also delighted to meet the man who won last year's Brownlow Medal, Patrick Dangerfield.

It was the first time he had met a Brownlow medallist.

Asked what it's like to have the Charles Brownlow name, the man himself replied: "I'm proud to carry the name.

It depends which state I've been in when it comes to the number of times I'm asked if there's any connection.

"But I just tell them it was my grandfather."

Brownlow is very proud of his grandfather, who he never met.

"He made a great contribution to Aussie Rules. I often think it's a great pity he couldn't see it today.

"He was one of the foundations of the game over 100 years ago."

Dangerfield was rapt to meet Brownlow.

"To meet Charles this afternoon, it's quite special," he said.

"Especially I think give the significance he has, not only within the AFL but with our football club as well."
