Geelong vice captain Harry Taylor says blooding three debutants in the one match made for an exciting night against the Giants.
Zach Guthrie, Sam Simpson and Wylie Buzza all had their first taste of senior football in last Saturday night’s nail-biting draw with Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium, and all acquitted themselves well.
21-year-old Buzza finished as his side’s leading goal kicker on the night with two majors, including a memorable set shot from outside 50 that will go down as the first goal of his career.
“That was amazing – that first goal,” Taylor told RSN on Monday morning.
“The smile on his face, it was just raw emotions and excitement. He’s actually played some really good footy in the VFL this year for us, working extremely hard now for a long period of time. He deserved his spot.”
“It was exciting to see him put one through from 50. He was outstanding and great reward for the work he’s done.”
The two 19-year-olds in Guthrie and Simpson were equally impressive; both tallying 13 disposals and not looking out of place despite their young age.
“I was worried at three quarter time that we’d have to take them off because they’d have to go to bed,” Taylor joked.
“It’s pretty amazing to see two guys so young, so raw in terms of their body shape at this stage of their careers, but both really settled into the game really well and did some nice things for us.”
“We’re very excited to have them out there.”
