GEELONG will soon start the process of extending coach Chris Scott's contract.

Scott is contracted until the end of the 2017 season, but CEO Brian Cook said the club wanted to move swiftly in beginning discussions with the 2011 premiership coach and his management on a new deal.

"We'll look to start negotiations pretty quickly," Cook told SEN.

Cook said the only reason as to why the club had not begun those talks already was the fact Geelong's board may have been up for reappointment at the club's Annual General Meeting on December 19.

With no new nominations coming through before the cut off date on Monday, the board will remain at its status quo.

"We didn't get any further nominations apart from the current board which is fantastic and it means we can go about our long-term planning and work with some sort of confidence," Cook said.

Scott has led the Cats to finals in every season, bar 2015, since taking over the top job in 2011.

Geelong has made two preliminary finals since its 2011 triumph, although Scott and the Cats have recorded a finals win-loss record of 2-8 in the years after.

Meanwhile, the renovation of Geelong's home base at Simonds Stadium – soon to be named GMHBA Stadium – is well on track according to Cook.

The Cats are due to play their first game at the renovated venue against the Western Bulldogs in round nine on May 19.

"It's on budget and on time," Cook said.

"We've got a bit of a joke down our way that we're lucky it's a night game so it gives us an extra two or three hours (to get ready).

"We're allowed into the site a week beforehand which gives us time to finish off the stadium before the first game."

Cook said the Cats would push for more home games at the venue in 2018 after they were given just seven home games in 2017.

"In coming years we're hoping for eight, nine or 10 so we're hoping to maximise the value down there," Cook said.
