Cats chief executive Brian Cook has made the following comment regarding Wednesday's announcement on the makeup of the AFL women’s league.

"The AFL today advised the Geelong Football Club that it will not be one of the clubs in the inaugural AFL women’s league.

"Our club feels we put forward a strong bid and the AFL has commended us on our submission and acknowledged our capability in supporting a women’s team in the future.

"We are pleased that the AFL has issued our club with a provisional licence to enter the league and will continue to discuss possibilities with the AFL in regard to growing women’s football in the Barwon region and to be ready to join the league as soon as possible.

"Naturally, we are disappointed to not be included in the first year of the new women’s league, but we are excited by the AFL’s commitment to work with us to grow the game in the region with a view to our club joining the league, possibly in 2018.

"We have already developed a plan as part of our academy to help grow the game among female participation in our region.

"We have a good relationship with the Geelong team in the VWFL and this will continue to build in the coming years."
