Geelong senior coach Chris Scott says his side’s ability to repel opposition attacks is allowing him to further tweak what has been to date a balanced Geelong forward line.
The Cats have an enjoyed an even spread of goal kickers so far in 2016 and sit seventh overall for points for – largely due to the ability of midfielders like Josh Caddy (6 goals) and Patrick Dangerfield (5 goals) to chime in at crucial times and aid more-permanent forwards Tom Hawkins (10 goals), Lincoln McCarthy (7) and Steven Motlop (6 goals) inside forward 50.
At the other end of the ground, the Geelong defence has been rock-solid after six games to concede the second fewest points against in the competition.
That reliable defensive unit has certainly buoyed the senior coach, and is allowing him to focus on further improving the side’s attacking prowess.
“We’ve always been confident in our defence and it’s been a feature of our game,” Scott said in this week’s episode of #TweetTheCoach.
“I don’t think you can finish right up the top in this competition unless you can defend pretty well.”
“[But] probably more uncertain for us going into the season was how we were going to look – particularly with our attacking personnel in our attacking half.”
“We’ve still got some options there that we think are going to develop but to this point in the season, seeing that we’re not too reliant on one or two players has been a real positive.”
