The Geelong Cats History Society invites you to attend the second John Button Sports Oration.
The Hon. John Button (1933-2008) was a noted Australian politician, author and passionate Geelong Cats fan.
He was Chairman of the Geelong Cats Sports Foundation from 2002–2007.
The first John Button Oration, on Tom Wills, was delivered in 2011 by renowned writer and author Martin Flanagan.
The Geelong Cats History Society takes great pleasure in ensuring the continuation of the John Button Sports Oration as a forum for celebrating the contribution of sport to Australian society.
The second John Button Sports Oration will be delivered by John's son, James Button.
James worked in 2009 as a speechwriter for the then-Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd.
He was previously Europe Correspondent for the Age and the Sydney Morning Herald.
James s a former deputy editor and opinion editor of the Age and has won two Walkley Awards for feature writing.
He has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from the University of Melbourne and a Masters in Journalism from Columbia University, New York.
James has spent the past two years researching and writing a history of the Geelong Football Club from 2006 to the present.
In the course of his research, James conducted more than 200 interviews and undertook comprehensive research through Club records, newspapers and contemporary sources.
