Geelong will utilise a fixturing anomaly to their advantage in the coming weeks.
The Cats will play Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium on Saturday night and then back it up in Brisbane the following Saturday night against the Lions.
Rather than flying the team back to Victoria in between, the Cats will instead head to the Gold Coast following the game to complete their training week at Broadbeach.
Geelong Cats General Manager of Football, Steve Hocking, says he expects the team to get multiple benefits out of the week in Broadbeach.
“It isn’t an ideal scenario to have back-to-back interstate games due to the amount of time that travelling takes up in the schedule.” Hocking said.
“Combine that with the current climate back home in Geelong and where we are at in the home and away season, it makes sense to change up the normal routine to take advantage of the fixturing.”
And while the Cats will be missing their recently unveiled high-performance facilities at Simonds Stadium during the week, Hocking is confident that the facilities on offer at Broadbeach will provide the perfect lead-in to the clash with the Lions.
“The Broadbeach Football Club and the Gold Coast Council have both been extraordinarily accommodating to the club and we really think the benefits of this training week will reach long in to the season.
“While we’ll be treating the training schedule during the week as we would down in Geelong, the activities the Gold Coast has to offer will mean the players in their downtime can be out in the sun and active which has numerous benefits to both their physical and mental wellbeing.”
South-east Queensland Cats supporters will also benefit with the club holding an open training session at Broadbeach Football Club on Thursday, July 6.
The starting time for the session will be announced closer to the date.
