Geelong Football Club great Bill Goggin has been named as the 2016 RJ Hickey award winner at tonight’s Annual General Meeting. The award is presented annually by the club for service to football.

Goggin spent a lifetime in the game as a player, coach and official. He played 248 games in the navy and white hoops, and twice claimed the best & fairest (1967 & 1970). Goggin captained the Cats on 84 occasions and was named as captain of the Victorian team in 1968. A key member of the 1963 premiership team, Goggin played 15 finals over his 14 seasons.

Goggin was inducted into the Australian football hall of fame in 2000 and is a Geelong Football Club hall of fame legend, team of the century member and life member.

After retiring as a player, Goggin embarked on a successful coaching career. He led Geelong West to VFA premierships in 1972 (2nd division) and 1975 (1st division). He then went onto to coach Footscray, leading the Bulldogs to the finals in 1976, and then back to his home club at Geelong. Goggin’s Cats twice reached the preliminary final (1980 & 1981), losing narrowly in both games to Collingwood.

He served on the Geelong Football Club board 1983-86, and coached the Victorian state of origin team a record 15 times between 1987 and 1993.
