Geelong’s VFL side has boosted their midfield stocks ahead of the 2017 season by signing experienced Collingwood VFL on-baller Ben Moloney.
Moloney joins the VFL Cats after four years on Collingwood VFL’s list, where he played 66 games and kicked 35 goals.
The past two seasons have seen Moloney play some of his best football, claiming Collingwood’s VFL Best & Fairest award in 2015 and finishing fourth in 2016.
The hard-running midfielder was also named in the VFL Team of the Year in 2015 and at only 25 years old, will hope to continue his strong form in new colours.
“We are really excited that Ben has committed to our football club,” VFL Manager Troy Selwood said.
“Ben is a highly respected player within the VFL competition, and will bring great leadership and experience to our side.”
Moloney was Collingwood’s VFL vice-captain last season and will bring experience and leadership to a young Cats side looking to improve in 2017.
“We are delighted to have him join us in the prime of his career. He is the ultimate professional, a quality leader, and a player of great values,” Selwood said.
“Ben will be an asset to our team and a role model to our developing AFL and VFL listed players.”
Moloney shouldn’t take long to adapt to his new surroundings, as the former Magpie played TAC Cup football with the Geelong Falcons and lives in Armstrong Creek.
He has also played GFL football for St. Joseph’s and early in his career spent three seasons at the Werribee Football Club.
However, Moloney’s first pre season in the blue and white hoops will be delayed due to an injury sustained in last season’s VFL qualifying final.
Moloney fractured his left leg in his final game as a Magpie and had surgery that saw him miss the remainder of the VFL finals series.
The Cats will release their VFL training squad in the coming weeks prior to the VFL pre-season commencing.
