The Geelong Cats will stand united with the Australian communities affected by the current bushfire crisis, announcing a range of initiatives to provide support.
The club proudly backs the AFL’s announcement of a State of Origin game in February and a $2,500,000 donation from the league and all 18 clubs.
Geelong Cats Chief Executive, Brian Cook, said the club as a whole had been moved by the crisis and are eager to assist in any way they can.
“As a club with such a strong connection to community, it has been with much sadness we have watched the scenes of devastation and loss affecting so many parts of Australia currently,” Cook said.
“However, we have also been inspired and moved by the incredible acts of bravery, compassion and mateship shown by our emergency services heroes and everyday Australians.”
“Whilst it will take a significant amount of time for these communities to get back on their feet, we want them all to know they have our support and we’ll be doing all we can to assist.”
The initiatives the club will facilitate to contribute to the communities in need include;
- A $50,000 donation from the Geelong Cats to be combined with contributions from the AFL and other clubs for an overall $2,500,000 donation from the industry.
- Participation of Geelong Cats players in the AFL State of Origin game at Marvel Stadium on February 28.
- Staff volunteering to assist with humanitarian response.
- Player led fundraising initiatives both online and at events.
- Fundraising event support from the club’s hospitality arm, Higher Mark.
- Tickets at a Cats match in 2020 to be provided to affected families and emergency service workers.
The club will also work with the Essendon Football Club to continue the support of the communities through the upcoming Powercor Country Festival games in Colac and at the MCG.
Attendees at this Saturday’s Family Festival at GMHBA Stadium will be able to support the club’s efforts with a percentage of merchandise and Charles & Co café sales on the day to be donated along with opportunities for members and supporters to make donations.
