Varcoe becomes the answer to a three-way trade
8/10/2014
This morning the Age reported that Travis Varcoe, who is hesitant to leave Victoria due to family reasons, might be the answer to the much spoken about Mitch Clark (Melbourne) and Heritier Lumumba (Collingwood) trades.
With Varcoe’s preference being to stay in Victoria, Collingwood along with North Melbourne have overtaken the Eagles in this week’s trade race, despite being the first club to vocalise their interest in Geelong’s athletic wingman.
According to the Age, Collingwood has already started the conversation with Varcoe about making the trade, which will allow Lumumba’s quest to move to Melbourne and Clark’s move to Geelong.
However, depending on the deal, Varcoe has expressed interest in both Collingwood and North Melbourne.

On the first day of trade week Varcoe sparks a lot of ineterest

7/10/2014

One day in and Travis Varcoe has already received “quite a bit of interest” in this year’s trade-week, according to Geelong’s Football Manager Neil Balme.

Although Varcoe has a year left on his contract, Balme says the premiership star from 2011 is open to exploring his options.

“I think he would be happy to consider it,” Balme told News Limited Monday.

“There’s a lot of things to be taken into account — longer term and all those things.

“I think he will be happy to stay just as well as go, so we’ll see what happens.”

Since debuting in 2007, Varcoe has played 138 games for the Cats including 17 finals. Hindered with injury in 2012 and 13, this year Varcoe completed a full season without interruption and finished strongly.

“There’s no guarantee he’s going to leave our place at this stage but it’s an interesting day,” Balme said.

“Everyone’s always a bit coy and everyone’s interested in everyone else’s players and there’s not a lot of commitments made on this day.”

“It’s a bit hard to go public on those things. He’s been very, very good for us. He’s had a terrific year, I think,” he said.

Malceski leaves Swans for Suns

After completing the best year of his career, Nick Malceski has stepped away from the Sydney Swans as an unrestricted free agent, accepting a three-year deal with the Gold Coast Suns.

This year Malceski, who didn’t miss a game all season, was awarded with his first All-Australian selection.

The AFL reports that Malceski informed Sydney’s senior coach, John Longmire, of his decision to move up to the Suns on Monday afternoon.

After 10 years at the club, Malceski admits he will miss playing for the Swans, however he is looking forward to becoming a leader of a young and upcoming team.

"I am sad to have to leave Sydney," Malceski said.

"It has been great to me and I owe the club so much. I came to the club as an 18-year-old and have become the person I am today because of this place and its people and culture.

"To have mentors like John Longmire, Brett Kirk and Adam Goodes was such a privilege and those habits, values and behaviours are forever with me.

"But this was too good an opportunity to miss both for my family and me personally. At Sydney I was surrounded by a depth of great leaders and at the Suns it is all new and young. I am looking forward to helping them build a sustainable and successful team."

Travis Varcoe might head West

Clark likely to become a Cat

6/10/2014 Having been off the field for the entirety of 2014, the Herald Sun reports that the former Melbourne key forward, Mitch Clark, is ready to make his AFL return after illness forced him to step away.

In the lead up to this week's trade period, the suggestion of Clark reestablishing his career at the Geelong Cats has become stronger and stronger.

The Herald Sun believes the trade will be approved as soon as the right deal is negotiated between Melbourne and Geelong.

Taylor Hunt

The Herald Sun claims Taylor Hunt is also keeping his options open and will be prepared to move from Simonds if a more suitable offer comes his way.

James Frawley officially becomes a Hawk

The Hawthorn Football Club has announced the official signing of former Melbourne defender James Frawley, who has joined the premiership team as an unrestricted free agent.

Higgins says goodbye to the Bulldogs

As a restricted free agent, North Melbourne has welcomed former Western Bulldog Shaun Higgins at the age of 26. Since his debut in 2006, the highly regarded footballer, recruited from the Geelong Falcons in 2005, has played 129 senior games. Starting out as a forward, Higgins has evolved into a goal-kicking midfielder.

Although Higgins is a big loss, the Bulldogs are confident they’ll come out on top after receiving an upgrade of three draft picks inside 30.
