Geelong captain Joel Selwood is open to the new concepts being thrown up to allow football to return in 2020.
Speaking to Channel 9’s Footy Classified last night, Selwood said he is happy to roll with the times in order to play the game he loves again.
It was revealed yesterday that the AFL is considering bringing football back in 2020 using a number of hubs across the country. Clubs will potentially be based in hubs outside Victoria, for a number of weeks or months to allow the season to get underway.
Tasmania, South Australia and Western Australia have been touted as potential hub locations.
“We will have to roll with the times. It’s one of those things this year,” Selwood said.
“I’m at the stage where I don’t have kids and a family to look after back home. The move for me is more simple than it is for other guys.
“I’m sure clubs will work through whatever they need to.”
Another real possibility in 2020 is short breaks between games, with club’s gearing up for breaks as short as 4 days in order to fit a 17-game season in before Christmas.
“I would have been more happy if I was 24 and trying to do it, than 31,” Selwood said with a laugh.
“It’s going to be a challenge, we understand we are going to have to use the majority of our list this year.
“The challenge with that is having them all ready, we do have guys in that development stage. You haven’t got everyone on your list right now ready to play games, but you may be in a position where you do have to play them.”
