Geelong coach Chris Scott.

Chris Scott has revealed how the Cats coaches box operates on match days, including his famous emotional moments through the game.

Scott has provided TV with plenty of great moments through his reactions during a game, whether it be great victories or controversial umpiring decisions.

“It’s a really tense environment (in the box),” Scott told The Howie Games podcast.

“I try to mitigate the tension by letting off steam every now and then. It’s the one time in the environment where I don’t place any restrictions on myself. Most of the time (when I explode) its irrational, but it isn’t supposed to be rational. It’s supposed to be a relief valve, a way to let off steam. And my rule Is simple. It can’t go on too long and can’t effect others in the box.”

While the coaches box is tense during match day, it operates in an effective manner, as the coaching staff enjoy a degree of autonomy in their roles.

“With our coaches we tend to have a very collaborative and open dialogue,” Scott said.

“The line coaches have a lot of autonomy. They have a direct line to the bench and the runner. The way I see it is my job is to try to coordinate all of that without micro-managing them. So technically I would dictate the messages or moves that go out, but generally those decisions are made with the assistant coaches and everyone agrees.

“The real challenge is when there is a disagreement and trying to manage that.”
