Geelong senior coach Chris Scott believes the development of home-grown players Jordan Murdoch and Jed Bews is pleasing on the eve of his side’s finals campaign.
Both players have taken significant strides in 2017 and have further room to improve in the remaining four games of the season.
Murdoch put in one of the best performances of his 87-game career last week against Carlton, booting 3.2. from 12 marks and 22 disposals
“Jordan’s got elite speed – he’d be one of the quickest players in the competition,” Scott told this week’s episode of Momentum Energy’s #AskTheCoach.
“But he’s actually quite strong and powerful over the ball as well. We’d like to see him continue the work he’s done this year in winning the ball in close and finding a way to get himself out of that congestion.”
“I think the signs are good.”
Like Murdoch, 23-year-old defender Bews has found himself in and out of the Geelong senior side in recent years.
But with 12 games to his name in 2017, and now the first choice small defender for the Cats’ best 22, Bews is showing he has further strings to his bow.
“[Jed is] another player with real power and strength,” Scott added.
“We’ve been really happy with the way he’s been able to take on high quality opposition forwards.”
“He’s got a pretty good record on Eddie Betts – not too many players in the competition could say that.”
“I think he’s growing in confidence when it comes to winning his own ball as well. He’s not just a lockdown defender anymore.”
