Cats skipper Joel Selwood is looking forward to kicking off his eighth AFL season starting with the Cats’ first NAB Challenge game against Collingwood at Simonds Stadium on February 12.

After a December training camp in Coffs Harbour and a break over the Christmas period, the ever disciplined Selwood is still in fine form.

“It (Christmas) wasn’t a time to let my hair down, there are small things I like to do each day for my own footy preparation.  I have learnt over my years as an AFL player not to waste these important few weeks,” Selwood said on his blog at www.joelselwood.com.au

Selwood says pre-season training is well and truly in full swing as the group work on improving and refining their game in preparation for the 2014 season.

“At this stage it’s hard work with a lot of game simulation based training out on the ground (basically means practice match amongst teammates) – after resting your body even for a short time, it’s hard to imagine you could ever play a full game again!

“I believe that January is the most important time for all footballers. The training preparation is vital to ensure that you are ready for the physical and mental demands of the game.

“And with the new rules constantly being implemented (i.e. interchange cap, sub rule, less runners and trainers out on ground), we must make sure our bodies are durable enough to withstand these changes. This is what makes AFL the hardest sport in the world.”

Selwood explains his focus is on taking his strength work to new levels, working on his contested ball craft and improving his skills under fatigue.

“I also like to watch some footage of teams and players to keep up with the emerging trends of the game and see what I can adapt to improve my own game.”
