As the AFL calendar hits the middle of the home and away season, Tom Lonergan and Scott Gullan take a closer look and discuss the Cats current strengths in the competition.

According to Gullan the Cats leading goal kicker, Tom Hawkins, has so far shown that he has been the crucial cog in the Cats success this season.

“I think we’re all looking for key forwards and a fit Tom Hawkins is a major strength to this club," Gullan tod Cats TV.

"Last week the ball didn’t get to him enough and he still got three goals… he’s the key to me.”

Thursday night the Cats were badly beaten in a number of areas across their game. In disposals the Cats were 108 touches behind the Swans, 20 clearances and 15 contested possessions.

From here Lonergan says the Cats contest in the middle will be their primary focus heading into every game.

“If you look at the stats it shows that when we do win we actually win contested ball quite convincingly and when we lose we lose it by a long stretch," Lonergan explained.

"That’s the key for us, is getting it and winning the clearances and getting it out of the middle and getting it forward.”
