The days of 14 goals are over
This Sunday will be 25 years since Gary Ablett senior kicked 14 goals against Richmond. Cats TV ask if such an event is possible again?
James Kelly and Scott Gullan were asked on Argue the Toss whether they believe Gary Ablett Senior’s bag of 14 goals against Richmond 25 years ago could ever be replicated in today’s footy?
With 25 years since the grand spectacle, both Kelly and Gullan confess that players and coaches wouldn’t allow for such a grueling by the opposition in today’s game.
“The way defence is played these days, say if Hawk got a away and kicked six or seven in a half of footy they would definitely be doing something about it and dropping a number or two back in front of him,” Kelly said.
“I think coaches and players are just a bit too smart for that to happen now but having said that it would be great if that did happen.”
Gullan says it’s also the game’s modern systems that limit players from being so dangerous in the forward line.
“Just in the zones the flooding the rotations of people, I could not see an individual going berserk and kicking 14 in this day and age.”
