With the start of the 2014 VFL season only one week away, George Burbury will be back in action for the Cats this weekend when he lines up against the newly created Footscray Bulldogs at Simonds Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Burbury, who was elevated to the Cats senior list in the off-season after 3 years on the rookie list, has been on the sidelines since suffering a broken jaw against Collingwood in a NAB Challenge match on the 12th of February.

Burbury has been named alongside fellow AFL listed players George Horlin-Smith, Jackson Sheringham, Josh Walker, Jesse Stringer, Jordan Schroder, Jed Bews, Joel Hamling and Brad Hartman.

First year draftees Darcy Lang, Jake Kolodjashnij, Nick Bourke and Michael Luxford have all also been named in the 31-man squad.

Tall defender James Toohey will miss the game after suffering a leg injury during last week’s practice match against Essendon, but is expected to return in coming weeks along with fellow new recruits Zac Bates and Jarrad Jansen.

A number of experienced VFL listed players have also been named to return with the Cats preparations starting to gear up for the season proper. Dominic Gleeson, Jack Hollmer and Kane Leersen have all been named to play after being rested last weekend, while Tom Maas. Luke Bath and Jay Lever have all been discharged from the medical room and are looking to stake a claim for Round 1 selection.

Footscray have named a strong squad that includes a number of AFL senior and rookie listed players such as Tom Williams, Jason Tutt, Tom Young, Brett Goodes, Ayce Cordy, Tom Campbell and talented youngsters Marcus Bontempelli, Mitch Honeychurch, Nathan Hrovat and Josh Prudden.

Their inaugural VFL listed playing squad is headlined by former Geelong and Essendon midfielder Brent Prismall and former Western Bulldogs duo Lukas Markovic and Nick Lower.

The match starts at 1.00pm with the Polly Farmer Gate opening at 12.00pm. Entry is FREE.

As will be the case for all VFL matches in 2014, VFL supporters will be watching the game from the Eastern side (Hickey Stand) of the ground.

The VFL Cats change rooms and coaches boxes and the interchange benches of both sides will continue to be based out of the Brownlow Stand, however no public seating will be available on the Western side of the ground.

A VFL match day canteen will be open to provide food and refreshments at the game this weekend.
