3 JIMMY BARTEL was a stand out performer for the Cats, silencing any criticism of his brief trip to the USA to view 2 games of the NBA finals when Geelong had a bye. Along with 3 team mates, Bartel lead the Cats with 31 disposals. He provided 2 goal assists and had tallied 10 possessions by quarter time. Displaying just how comfortable he is flying, Bartel soared over Mathew Stokes to take a spectacular mark early in the final term.

4 ANDREW MACKIE started the match in fine form, bombing the Cat’s second goal from 60m out just three minutes into the first quarter. Mackie was free across half back for long periods in the first half, gathering 8 disposals in a productive second term. He finished the match with 20 possessions and a game high 7 inside 50s but was one of many Cats who fell away late in the game.

7 HARRY TAYLOR looked well rested after a a family getaway to Bali during the bye, gathering 18 disposals while keeping Brisbane’s big forwards quiet. He had 5 rebound 50s and took 10 marks. His best mark for the game, however, did not make the stats sheet. After clearing the ball out of defence Taylor opportunistically ran the length of the ground, took a contested mark 50m from goal, straight in front, but had to hand the ball over because a Lion was infringed by Mitch Duncan in his approach to the contest.

8 JOSH HUNT has secured a spot in Geelong’s back 6 with consistent performance since he returned from injury. He has a long and accurate kick and is usually given the difficult task of kicking in after a behind. With 20 out of his 23 disposals effective and a game high 6 rebound 50s, Hunt provided excellent transition out of defence. Hunt’s bright white boots were a shining light for the Cats in more than one as the Lions kicked 8 goals to 1 in a stunning final quarter comeback.

9 JAMES KELLY collected 18 disposals, 9 of which were won in a contest. He provides important physical pressure for the Cats in the midfield and, as is often the case, lead the team with 5 tackles. He won 3 centre clearances, an area of weakness for the Cats this season that was much improved in the first three quarters but broke down in the the final term.

13 TOM LONERGAN
played a strong defensive game against Brisbane champion Jonathan Brown collecting 6 disposals, 5 of which were effective, and taking 3 marks. Most importantly he limited the Lions skipper to just 2 marks inside 50 and 1 goal. Lonergan is yet to miss a game this season and regularly holds his own against the best power forwards in the competition.

14 JOEL SELWOOD
played his best game for weeks, joining 3 other players on top of the Geelong possession tally with 16 kicks and 15 handballs. He also lead the Cats with 17 contested possessions and 7 clearances, 5 of which were won at the centre bounce. In previous matches this year Selwood has been able to lead by example and inspire better performance from his team when momentum was against them. Despite the relentless effort and hard nosed approach of Selwood, Geelong could not hold off the fast finishing Lions.

Simpson started the match well, gaining ascendancy in the first half over recently re-contracted Lion Matthew Leuenburger. He gathered 8 disposals and took 4 marks but was unable to maintain his early form and had little influence late in the game.

20 STEVE JOHNSON gathered 31 touches and kicked 2 goals, the first just before half time and the second the only Geelong major in the final term. Having been a mercurial and dangerous forward for much of his career, Johnson is a bone-fide onballer and a vital link man when the Cats transition. He had 3 rebound 50s and 7 inside 50s, helping the Cats equal the season record of 39 forward 50 entries in a half.

He took 3 marks and made 2 tackles, chasing and hassling well to lock the ball inside attacking 50m. Murdoch was substituted out of the game for Jesse Stringer with 5 minutes remaining in the third quarter.

26 TOM HAWKINS
was well held by Daniel Merrett, unable to match his dominant 6 goal performance last time he played at the Gabba. Playing 88% of game time, he gathered 9 possessions and took 3 marks. Hawkins found it difficult to mark against the close checking Merret but still managed to kick 3 goals, including the 200th of his career in the second quarter.

27 MATHEW STOKES collected 18 disposals in the first half and finished the game with 31. Playing in the midfield, Stokes has been one of Geelong’s most consistent performers this season, displaying ever-growing confidence in this new role with 5 clearances and 12 contested possessions. In addition to providing the launching pad for Jimmy Bartel’s big grab Stokes took 11 marks, more than any other Cat.

28 ALLEN CHRISTENSEN was one of a number of Cats who struggled to stay involved in the game for the full four quarters. He gathered 18 disposals and won 1 centre clearance. Christensen was most effective in the forward half of the ground, sending the Cats inside 50m on 3 occasions and kicked his first goal late in the first term. 29 CAMERON GUTHRIE has worked hard to cement his position in the Geelong defence and put in another strong performance collecting 9 disposals against the Lions. He played majority of the match in the back half, ably manning bigger opponents deep in defence and freeing up fellow defenders such as Mackie and Enright to attack on the rebound. Guthrie took 3 marks for the match and kicked a goal when moved up the ground to curtail the damaging influence of Daniel Rich in the first term.

31 JAMES PODSIADLY
collected 14 disposals playing both as a forward and later in the game in defence. He took 8 marks pushing high up the ground to provide a big target when the Cats worked the ball from the back line. His best mark for the game was taken one handed in a contest on the goal line. On an acute angle, he stepped in field and snapped the Cat’s second goal of the third quarter.

32 STEVEN MOTLOP provided excellent additions to the highlight reel but struggled to have a regular or sustained impact on the match. Playing in the forward line he made 4 tackles and had 4 inside 50s. Motlop kicked a brilliant goal in the second term from 50m out, just 5m in from the boundary. He nearly added a second minutes later after ducking and weaving through two Brisbane defenders but his shot was off target. His goal in the third quarter was kicked on the run, just as far out and only slightly straighter than his first.

41 JESSE STRINGER was substituted into the match, his second for the year, just a few minute before three quarter time. Replacing Jordan Murdoch, he collected 4 disposals and made 3 tackles. Stringer played 28% of game time, during which Brisbane had momentum. Despite the Lions dominance through this period he had 1 clearance and 1 inside 50.

44 COREY ENRIGHT was sensational in the first half, cutting off Brisbane’s forward entries and gathering 17 disposals. He rebounded from defensive 50m on 5 occasions and pushed up the ground to send the Cats inside 50m 3 times during the match. He collected just 6 possessions in a disappointing second half and was unable to help the Geelong defence resist the late surge from the Lions.

46 MARK BLICAVS has been a consistent performer in his his debut season, missing just one game against the Giants in round 11. He looked refreshed after an extended break, taking a career best 6 marks and gathering 17 disposals with 100% efficiency. He won 8 hit outs playing almost all of the game on the wing, only taking part in the centre bounce contests late in the match. Near the end of the second term Blicavs was rewarded with a free kick for holding the ball after executing an excellent tackle on Brisbane’s Daniel Merrett deep in the Cat’s forward line. He opted for a drop punt from a tight angle, an irregular selection from a Geelong forward, and kicked a goal to put his team ahead by 27 points at half time.
