On Cats TV James Kelly and AFL journalist Peter Ryan identified Fremantle’s key strengths that have the potential to cause harm if left alone.

This year the Dockers have injected the best defence tactics compared to any other side in the AFL. Kelly says their senior coach, Ross Lyon, has added that strength to their game and the Dockers have done everything they can to adopt it.

“I think defensively they’re the best team in the competition, it’s their main thing and it’s what Ross Lyon coaches really well.”

“When you watch them play they all buy into it and they shorten the ground in defence really well and that’s something we’re going to have to combat.

“On the other side of that they’ve got a really potent forward line as well with Pavlich, Walters and Ballantyne like we mentioned before.

"It’s a really strong forward line so we’re going to have to put an enormous amount of defensive pressure on as well, so it’s going to be a real arm wrestle I think.”

Ryan says the only way to suppress the Dockers defence strategies is to get ownership of the ball and to control it well, especially when they’re in the goal square.

“It will be all about the contest around the stoppages and who can get first use of the ball,” Ryan said.

“If the Cats can get the ball inside-50 they’ll have to be very careful the way they use it going forward because Fremantle are good at just dropping off their defence.

“If you go indiscriminately inside-50 then it’s going to come back the other way pretty quickly and they’ve got Walters and Ballantyne who are quick, exciting and probably can ruffle the crowd and a few players too.

“And if they hit the scoreboard early it’s going to be a really tough game for Geelong.”
