Hinkley rises the Power
Chris Scott says Port Adelaide have improved since their last meeting and Cats will be ready for another tough contest
Geelong’s senior coach, Chris Scott, says this week’s Semi Final against the newly developed Port Adelaide will be another tough contest for the Cats.
Leading up to Friday night’s clash at the MCG Scott identifies where Port’s strengths now lie, after spending the year under Ken Hinkley’s rule.
“Well they’ve improved in all facets,” Scott said on Tweet the Coach.
“Certainly in Ken Hinkley’s first year they were always going to be developing their game style, and slowly adapting to the way he wanted them to play.”
Since their last two meetings this year in Round 9 and 20, Scott believes the Cats will be confronted with a slightly harder challenge this Friday night.
During the season Port’s attacking game has sharpened and Scott says now their defence force is starting to take shape too.
Having played and coached at Geelong, Scott says the Cats know how influential Hinkley's coaching style is, and his level of impact only became more evident against Collingwood on Saturday night.
“I would have assumed the first step in that process is working on their attack and they’re a very dangerous attacking team, they use the ball well and score very quickly,” Scott explained.
“And probably in the last month or six weeks they’ve been a little bit stronger defensively.
“Most of the people here at Geelong know Ken Hinkley and really rate him as a football tactician, so we’re going to have our work cut out to make sure we nullify their strengths.”
Last week the Cats chose to avoid shorter options against Fremantle and Scott admits that in some cases it was probably the wrong move.
“Late in the game when the heat is on there can be a little bit of a tendency, when you need to score, to get the ball in as quick and deep as possible into your forward 50, but ideally we would have wanted to use the ball a little bit more,” Scott said.
“We did ignore some short options and in retrospect we probably should have taken them but really that was probably a pattern through the whole game. We’re not necessarily a side that bangs it deep inside-50 all the time. We like to use the ball with a little bit more creativity.
"We do need to dip our lid to Fremantle a little bit, they defended really strongly but hopefully we have a chance to play them next time and we will approach those situations differently.”
