FRESH from his 150th game, Geelong's Mathew Stokes has agreed to a two-year deal with the club.

AFL.com.au understands the unrestricted free agent, who celebrated his milestone match with 30 disposals and two goals against West Coast on the weekend, will extend his stay with the Cats to the end of 2015.

After making his debut in 2006, the 28-year-old has had a career-best season in 2013.

In 19 games Stokes has averaged 25 disposals and kicked 12 goals, having spent more time in the midfield and grown into a leader at the club.

His best games of the season came early, with a starring role in the Cats' win over the Sydney Swans in round four and its triumph over Essendon in round seven.

Stokes played a strong role in the Cats' 2007 and 2011 premierships, but missed the 2009 triumph when a groin injury ruled him out of the preliminary final and he was not able to force his way back into the line-up.

Cats coach Chris Scott said earlier this year Stokes had worked hard to win his position in the midfield after being confined to a small forward role for most of his career.

"He was disappointed in his year last year, and he was aware that we were going to look to promote some younger types that played a similar position to him, which provided an opportunity," Scott said in May.

"It meant that he could push further up the field and he's taken the opportunity with both hands.??"He adds a slightly different look to our midfield. He finds the footy; he uses it really well.??

"He's a really smart, natural footballer so…we're very pleased with his progress."
