Round 23 | AFL Match Preview

The Cats are set for another important clash against St Kilda on Saturday night

Geelong are set for the penultimate round of the home and away season, when they take on St Kilda at Marvel Stadium on Saturday night.

The Cats moved back into the top four last weekend with a win over Fremantle, with a chance to further entrench themselves heading into the final week of the season.

A win on Saturday night will officially lock Geelong into the top eight, securing their spot in the post season.

St Kilda are out of the race for finals but have found a rich vein of form, winning three of their last four games including a 48 point win over Richmond last Sunday.

    Match Details

    Last Time We Met

The two sides last met back in round one this year, when a late goal from Patrick Dangerfield helped the Cats hang on to record an eight point win at GMHBA Stadium.

St Kilda made a late comeback booting three goals in four minutes to cut the margin to one point, but Geelong’s skipper stood tall to ensure the Cats started their year with a victory.

Dangerfield (25 disposals, eight clearances) was very influential, as was Ollie Dempsey who starred with three goals and nine score involvements.

Defensively the Cats were great all night with Jake Kolodjashnij, Tom Stewart and Zach Guthrie combining for 25 intercept possessions.

    00:39

Geelong came out hot in the first term, holding St Kilda goalless while booting three majors of their own to open up a 17 point lead at quarter time.

The defensive unit put on a spectacular aerial display taking numerous intercept marks, led by Lawson Humphries who collected 11 disposals and five intercept possessions in the first quarter.

    00:38

The Cats pulled away in a blistering second quarter, piling on six goals to extend the margin to 33 points at the main break.

A highlight for Geelong was the versatility down forward, finding eight different goal-kickers for their nine goals in the first half.

Humphries continued to star finding 19 disposals and seven marks in the opening half, Jack Bowes looked comfortable across half back with 16 possessions, while Jack Henry took four contested marks in a dominant display.

The game took a big turn after the break, with St Kilda gaining momentum and kicking six unanswered goals to leave the Cats trailing by six points at three quarter time.

Both teams traded goals early in the last term, before the Saints kicked away late to close out the win.
