Week 7 | AFLW Match Preview

Everything you need to know as Geelong heads to the Swinburne Centre for a clash against Richmond

Geelong head to the Swinburne Centre on Saturday, setting themselves for a crucial Week 7 clash against Richmond.

The Cats are looking to secure consecutive wins for the first time in the 2024 season, coming off a narrow win over Sydney last Sunday.

Saturday's challenge will not be an easy one for Geelong, with Richmond in hot form winning five of their first seven games.

Week 7 is also the AFLW's Pride Round, with the Cats to wear a specially designed guernsey on Saturday.

    Last Time We Met

Geelong and Richmond last squared off in round nine of the 2023 season, with the Cats dominating proceedings and closing out an impressive 38-point win.

Inaccurate kicking kept the margin from blowing out further, but an impressive four-goal last quarter helped Geelong runaway with a comfortable victory.

Georgie Prespakis led the way amassing 27 disposals and nine clearances, Claudia Gunjaca picked off nine intercept possessions and Jackie Parry recorded an equal game high six score involvements.

    Player to Watch

Becky Webster has built an incredibly strong 2024 campaign, becoming a prime mover for the Cats off half back with her run and carry.

Through the first seven games, Webster leads Geelong in disposals and inside 50 entries, while sitting second for intercept possessions.

Richmond have been notoriously hard to score against in 2024, so Webster's run and carry will be crucial off half back to break the lines and set up the Cats attacking forays.

Geelong overpowered by Richmond in close contest

Geelong fought until the finish in close loss to Richmond on Saturday

    Proudly presented by

GEELONG have suffered a thrilling seven-point defeat to Richmond in windy but sunny conditions at a sold-out Swinburne Centre on Saturday afternoon.

In an action-packed contest, Richmond came home with the four points sealing the 6.10 (46) to 5.9 (39) victory.

The lead see-sawed throughout a frantic final quarter, with the winner decided only in the final minute of the game when Tigers captain Katie Brennan kicked a goal to seal the win.

    05:51

Geelong started the match with the breeze but were only able to score one goal for the term despite doubling Richmond in inside 50s.

The goal came 10 minutes into the term when small forward Kate Surman, who returned to the side this week, converted from a free kick for high contact from Richmond defender Libby Graham.

Julia Crockett-Grills (18 disposals, five inside 50s) and Chantel Emonson (18 disposals, 455m gained) continued to propel the Cats forward into the wind in the second quarter, but once again, these forays forward didn't result in goals.

The Cats' inability to score kept the Tigers in the game and when Richmond's Emilia Yassir and Mon Conti scored goals in the second term, the home side went into the half-time break with a five-point lead.

It was only a matter of time until dangerous Geelong forward Aishling Moloney (23 disposals, eight score involvements) hit the scoreboard, with the Irish woman marking on the goal line before snapping her first.

Fellow forward Jackie Parry followed shortly after giving the Cats back the lead.

    02:34

However, a quick response from Yassir kept Richmond in the game when she scored her second, with Geelong going into the final break with a two-point lead.

It was goal-for-goal to start the final term with Geelong's Parry kicking her second from a free kick, followed shortly by an Eilish Sheerin left foot snap from the boundary for the Tigers.

Veteran Geelong tall Kate Darby scored the next, but again Richmond responded when Yassir got her third.

As she has done all season, Katie Brennan stood up when her team needed it, kicking the sealer for the home side to give Richmond the win.
