Max Holmes has capped off an impressive rookie season by taking out the Best Young Player Award at this year’s Carji Greeves Medal on Thursday night.
Selected with pick 20 in last year’s national draft, Holmes went on to play 12 games in 2021. He averaged 13 disposals in the nine games he took the field, with three as an unused substitute.
The 19-year-old recorded a career-high 18-disposals in Round 23 against Melbourne and featured in two of the Cats finals.
“I am very honoured, and it has been a great season. I was pretty much just happy to be out there in the team and happy out there getting a game,” Holmes said.
“I felt very welcomed in my first year here and I can say on behalf of all of the other first year (players), Pauli, Shannon and Stevo that we’ve all felt very welcomed here.”
Holmes had many moments of brilliance in his rookie season including his first goal where he initially won the contested ball before utilising his elite acceleration to break away and register his first career major.
He also demonstrated an exceptional work ethic and willingness to do anything the team needed. He was Geelong’s leading tackler in their semi-final win against the Giants, and second only to skipper Joel Selwood for pressure acts.

Holmes paid tribute to the coaches for helping in his development this year. Particularly Shane O’Bree, Shaun Grigg and Matthew Knights.
“Thanks to all of the coaches. I feel like I have developed a lot this year with the help of you guys in particular."
“Cheesy and Grigga who I’ve spent a lot of time with and Matthew Knights as well, I’d just like to thank them.”
