Geelong’s first draft pick, Toby Conway, will wear the number 6 next season, the same number as mentor and former Cats premiership ruckman Brad Ottens.
The two spent some time together earlier this year developing the young ruckman's craft.
“I did a little bit of work with him in the pre-season of this year and he just taught me a few drills and stuff to do,” said Conway.
“It was obviously an honour and I was really curious and eager to learn because he’s such a great player and he was a three-time premiership player.”
Despite the pairs’ relationship the 18-year-old says choosing Ottens’ number was purely coincidental.
“I probably didn’t think about it too much,” said Conway.
“It got offered to me and I did know it was Otto’s, but it is just a number, there’s a lot of hard work that needs to go into it.”
The Geelong local who grew up barracking for the Cats’ was thrilled to be picked up with pick 24 in last week’s draft.
“It’s awesome, obviously couldn't be happier with where I am,” said Conway.
“It always has been a dream and now I’m I guess on the same list as some of my heroes, so yeah absolutely stoked.”
