The Geelong Cats have selected Zane Williams with the 12th selection of the 2022 NAB AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft.
A goal-kicking forward/midfielder from Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL, the 21 year-old has kicked 13 goals from his seven games at state level, including a haul of five against Glenelg early in the season.
Standing 183cm and weight 71kg, Geelong List Manager Stephen Wells said the club was excited to call Williams’ name on Wednesday night.
“In consultation with Andrew Mackie, and at the end of the national draft we left a spot open to see what would happen over the course of the summer training period right through to now,” Wells said.
“He’s been at Woodville-West Torrens for a long time, coming right through their junior programs, has been a captain and good player all the way through.”
Wells said William’s senior opportunities came after former Eagle Tyson Stengle joined the Cats late last season.
“He’s earned his senior opportunities over there after Tyson came to us and filled his spot really well. He’s played every game this year in the seniors and has been able to kick goals consistently, and was rewarded with state selection against the WAFL a couple of weeks ago.”
“We’re excited for Zane to be here, not just the short term, we think he’s got a pretty bright future.”
