After training this morning the Geelong Cats packed their bags to visit 50 schools as part of the club’s School Cats program.
School Cats plays a major part of the four Geelong Cats community engagement programs, which all operate on the principle of partnership and ethically sound community investment.
Throughout the season the Cats will visit 130 schools across Geelong and its neighbouring regions, including the Bellarine Peninsula, Surf Coast, Golden Plains and Colac.
Depending on the schools specific curriculum, the players either conducted a Healthy Cats session or a clinic.
Healthy Cats is in a new initiative in 2015 focusing on healthy choices. This program was developed by the Cats community team in conjunction with Healthy Together Geelong and the AFL.
Overall the players were promoting five key messages:
· Eat 2 pieces of fruit and 5 serves of vegetables every day
· Drink water
· Avoid high fat and high sugar foods… they are sometimes foods
· Stay active! Get outside and keep your body moving
· Limit your screen/online time
At the end of each visit, every school received a class set of Healthy Cats Recipe Books, which features one healthy dish from every player.
