Is Motlop ready to return?
Cats TV ask whether Steven Motlop should return to the team this week against Port Adelaide.
On Argue the Toss this week Cats TV asked Hamish McIntosh and Scott Gullan if Geelong’s speedster Steven Motlop should be re-introduced for this week’s game if ready?
Last year Motlop had a stand out season where he came second on Geelong’s goal-board with a grand total of 44 goals.
Coming off an impressive run in the VFL last Saturday night, McIntosh believes Motlop is well conditioned to slip back in to help the Cats against Port Adelaide this Sunday.
“He played really well in the VFL and he played two or three quarters and he showed that his fitness was up to scratch,” McIntosh told Cats TV.
“I’m sure if he gets through the training session this week he’ll be pushing for selection and I hope to see him back in there and playing footy soon.”
The way Geelong has managed their younger group has meant that players like Motlop have the experience and endurance to make a comfortable and quick transition back into AFL level.
This is why Gullan is adamant that Motlop shouldn’t be left in the seconds if he’s fit to play, as the Cats kids are now too important to leave out.
“It’s been a program since Chris Scott came in here, even in 2011 he said ‘we’re going to have to play these kids’ and now we’re seeing the fruits of it,” Gullan said.
“So Motlop, to me, you play the Rolls Royce you don’t leave him in with the Toyota Corollas. I mean he’s got to have the sub vest on this week and come on and play two quarters.”
