Jack Bowes

Jack Bowes is ‘primed and ready’ to take on Carlton this week if selected according to Geelong assistant coach Shaun Grigg.

Bowes was close to playing in Round 1 against the Magpies before a calf issue held him back from his Cats debut. After playing a half in the VFL on Saturday, the 24-year-old has his hand firmly up for selection.

Chris Scott said in his weekly press conference ahead of the season opener that Bowes would have likely played if not for the calf complaint, and now Grigg said he'd gotten through his VFL hitout unscathed.

"Jack was really close to playing Round 1, we just gave him a run for a half in the VFL, so he looks primed and ready to put his hand up for selection," Grigg told the To the Final Bell podcast on Monday.

“We obviously know there's going to be one change with Tommy Stewart not going to get up for this game, so we'll have our training session (on Tuesday) and our match committee will pick the team.

“We had a lot of guys get through. Sam Simpson played well in the VFL, Jhye Clark played a half, so there are a lot of guys that will be looking to put their hands up.”

Bowes played across both defense and through the midfield in this time on the Gold Coast, and Grigg says that versatility will be called upon this year with Geelong.

“I think one of his greatest strengths is his versatility,” Grigg said.

“He's a very smart player, he can read the game well, and he's a great ball user. So for us, whatever position he plays we'll be looking for him to use those strengths. First and foremost getting the ball into his hands, and then Jack making some decisions off the back of that to help set up some nice attacking options for us.”

Grigg said the Cats were very keen to get to Thursday night after last week’s 22-point loss to Collingwood.

“We'll go after a couple of things (at training Tuesday), a short, sharp session, and the boys are up for it.

“They spoke about the excitement of the six-day break, getting back on the horse, getting back to the MCG against Carlton who love a contest, so our boys are looking for it.”
