Sam De Koning

Geelong defender Sam De Koning is expected to be fit to face the West Coast Eagles in Adelaide this weekend, according to Geelong GM of Football Simon Lloyd.

De Koning copped a heavy knock against Gold Coast and pending a final clearance from the club’s medical staff, will join his teammates in Adelaide for Gather Round.

"Sam's had a really good couple of training sessions late last week and our expectation is that Sam will be available to play, but again, we need to get the final tick off from our chief medical officer," Lloyd said.

Jed Bews will miss at least the next fortnight after suffering a head knock against Hawthorn on Easter Monday, but according to Lloyd, is in good spirits.

"Jed's obviously entered the concussion protocols, so that will be a gradual return over the next 12-14 days," he said. "Jed's in good spirits at the moment, and we're guided by our medical team in that space."

Developing ruckman Toby Conway and high flying defender Jack Henry are both making strong progresses in their respective reconditioning programs.

"Toby is currently progressed through his reconditioning program, he's running, and so now skills will be introduced, and his running volume will be increased, so Toby's tracking really well.

"Jack's going through a reconditioning program as well and there's been no hiccups. I saw him with the boxing gloves on this morning and again, things for will increase for Jack in the coming weeks."

Lloyd said he was especially pleased to see James Willis play his first game of the season in the VFL on Monday after hip surgery.

"James had surgery some months back," he said.

"It was pretty exciting for the entire team to see James return and to come back and play his first game at the MCG, and we were all there for him.

"It speaks to James and his resilience because it is very difficult for a young player to come through that. He's a strong hard player and it's just great to see him back. and hopefully now he gets consecutive games and he can show the team he is a quality player."

Lloyd has encouraged all South Australian-based Geelong supporters to come down to Woodville-West Torrens on Saturday for the club’s open training session.

"We fly out on Friday but we'll have an open training session so if everyone can get to Woodville- West Torrens on Saturday morning at 10.30am, that's where Tyson Stengle played in a premiership in 2021 and Tyson wants to see all Cats fans and members there.

"We'll be doing a heap of activities while we're there, so we can't wait to see everyone in Adelaide."
