It is not often that a player has such a profound impact on a team and doesn’t control the limelight, but that is certainly the case with star Cat Amy McDonald in 2023.

The three time best and fairest winner is quietly putting together one of her strongest seasons, averaging over 24 disposals and eight tackles per game while sitting eighth in the league for clearances.

The 25 year old has polled coaches votes in seven of her eight games this year, building one of the top midfield trios in the competition alongside Georgie Prespakis and Nina Morrison.

Despite her solid performances week in and week out, McDonald said that she is personally searching for more consistency across the final two games of the season.

"I have had some good patches and some quieter patches, so ideally I want to look for a few more consistent games,” McDonald said.

“I think it has been consistent with the form of the team as well, we have had periods where we looked really good and then parts where we haven't played how we wanted to.

"We know we have everything we need within the team, and when we put it together we can play a really good brand of footy and beat most teams in the competition.

"For us it isn't about changing too much around, but if we can do it consistently across four quarters then it can put us in a really good place."

McDonald was selected to her first All-Australian team last season, following another dominant campaign that helped lead the Cats to a spot in the top eight.

Geelong sit eighth on the ladder in 2023 with two games remaining, most likely needing to win both matches to secure a finals berth this season, although their strong percentage means one win could be enough.

McDonald said the team is excited about the challenge ahead of them, with the midfield group ready to help lift the Cats to new heights over the coming weeks.

"I know finals don't officially kick off for another couple of weeks, but we can pretty much treat these last two weeks like finals as must win games,” McDonald said.

“We are really excited to play Richmond and Hawthorn, hopefully, if we can play our best footy then we can head into finals with some momentum.

"Our midfield is really progressing well, we are creating a strong connection with our group and it is really exciting to see the future ahead of us.

"We have become more dynamic, more girls can play dual positions and it really opens up options for what we can do.”
