Geelong Football Club has made three AFLW list changes, informing Mia Skinner, Ingrid Houtsma and Sammy Gooden they would not be offered contracts for 2024.
Skinner was drafted by Geelong in 2019 and had an injury-interrupted first stint at the Cats before being redrafted to the Club ahead of AFLW Season 7 following a successful season in the Club’s VFLW program.
After leading Geelong’s VFLW goalkicking in 2022, Skinner made her AFLW debut in Round 1 in Season 7 and played five games in the Hoops.
Houtsma, a Geelong Falcon product, joined the Club via a trade with Richmond ahead of AFLW Season 7.
The 20-year-old played seven VFLW games for Geelong, honing her craft across half-back and the wing.
Gooden joined Geelong ahead of Season 7 as an Other Sport Rookie having played elite netball before switching to Australian Rules football. She has spent the past two seasons on the Club’s inactive list but featured in Geelong’s 2023 practice games on managed minutes.
Geelong Cats Assistant General Manager of Football Brett Johnson thanked all players for their contribution.
“Mia has been involved with our AFLW program for four seasons and has been a strong teammate and has shown great resilience to fight her way back to play at AFLW level,” Johnson said.
“Ingrid has contributed a lot to our program since crossing from Richmond ahead of Season 7 and leaves our Club as someone who has grown significantly as a player and a person.
“Although we didn’t see Sammy feature much on-field, she has always remained connected with the group while she worked through her return to play program after giving birth to her daughter Billie.
“Mia, Ingrid and Sammy have all been fantastic people to have at Geelong, and we wish them all the best in their next step.”
The initial AFLW list changes follow the retirement of inaugural Cat Renee Garing who announced her retirement earlier in the season after playing 33 games in the Hoops.
The 2023 AFLW Trade Period begins on December 7 and will run until December 14 with the 2023 AFLW Draft to be held on Monday December 18.
