Ahead of Sunday’s clash with the Swans, we wind the clock back to 2002 to re-live a classic contest between Geelong and Sydney at the SCG for this weeks ‘Time Cat-sule’.

Against the odds, on the road and against a strong Sydney side, the Cats stormed home with a six goal final quarter to overcome a 28 point deficit, clinching a two point victory.

Kent Kingsley was the hero for the Cats booting four majors, including the final goal of the game at the five minute mark of the last quarter to seal the win for Geelong.

The Cats struggled early in the 2002 season, entering the round 12 clash against Sydney in 10th spot on the ladder, managing just five wins from the opening 11 games of the year.

Desperate to return home with four points, the Cats travelled to Sydney to face a Swans team that boasted names like Adam Goodes, Tony Lockett, Jude Bolton and Barry Hall.

The Cats themselves had a number of club legends in the side, including Matthew Scarlett, Cameron Ling, Joel Corey and Corey Enright.

There were also some fresh faces at the start of their AFL journey, including Paul Chapman in his 19th game and James Kelly in game number five.

Geelong trailed at every break, entering the final quarter eight points adrift before the Swans booted the first three goals of the last term.

Charlie Gardiner got the ball rolling with a goal at the ten minute mark, before the Cats piled on six goals in 15 minutes to storm over the top of the Swans.

Sydney had one last chance to steal the game in the final minute, but their last shot sailed wide left to seal the result and the four point for Geelong.

Cameron Ling was awarded the three Brownlow votes for his 23 disposal game, while Peter Riccardi starred with 22 possessions and four goals.
