This week’s ‘Time Cat-Sule’ takes us back to 2014, when Geelong took on Carlton in a Round 12 nail-biter under the roof at Marvel Stadium.

With less than 90 seconds left and the Cats needing a goal to win the game, there was only going to be one player who would impose himself on the contest and be the hero for Geelong.

Joel Selwood collected the ball from a stoppage on the half forward flank, took a few steadying steps and launched home the game winner to break Blues hearts, with just one minute on the clock.

Mathew Stokes (22 disposals & 3 goals) led the way for Geelong, while Tom Hawkins (17 disposals & 4 goals) and James Kelly (27 disposals) both had a significant impact on the result.

The game itself was an entertaining, see-sawing affair which saw both teams hold a healthy lead at different stages.

After letting the Blues get out to a nine point lead at the first break, the Cats slammed home seven goals in the second quarter to take a 19 point lead into half time.

Carlton rallied after the main break and regained momentum, booting six unanswered goals to lead by 16 points halfway through the final term.

Geelong closed the gap to seven points with four minutes on the clock, before a George Horlin-Smith goal set the stage for Geelong’s fearless leader to steal the game away from the Blues.

The Cats went on a winning streak following the Carlton clash, claiming victory in nine of their next ten games to set them on the path to a top four finish.

The final win of the streak came in another nail-biting win over the Blues in round 21, by just six points to bookend a brilliant stretch of games.

Mathew Stokes received two Brownlow Votes as the best for the Cats, while Tom Hawkins was awarded one vote.
