Assistant Coach Steven King

The Cats have made some positional moves over the past few weeks, with assistant coach Steven King noting that it has sparked a positive shift among the playing group.

Geelong have wrestled back some momentum on the back of two big wins, defeating Essendon by 45 points and Hawthorn by 51 points in consecutive weeks.

One big factor has been the changes made in the line-up, including Sam De Koning in the ruck and Tom Stewart in the midfield.

Speaking with Harf on RSN Breakfast this morning, King said the changes have helped Geelong regather momentum as they look for a third consecutive win on Friday night.

“We have got a bit of a form spike in some senior players, plus getting Paddy Dangerfield back certainly helps,” King said.

“There were patches where our form wasn't as consistent as we would like, we would play patches in games but it just wasn't enough to get across the line.

“We went back to work and redefined what we wanted to play like, what our identity was and lifted the pressure and intensity around the footy.

“We tried to play the game in our front half a little bit more, but there was certainly a few positional switches that Scotty and the coaches have come up with which rejuvenated a few individuals.

“It gave everyone a little spike, so that certainly helps as well.”

The attention now turns to a Friday night blockbuster against the reigning premiers, with the Cats set to battle Collingwood at the MCG.

A win this weekend can set Geelong up for a run at the top four in the back half of the season, while the Pies will be looking to move back inside the top eight after dropping their past two matches.

King told RSN that the Cats are expecting a strong response from the Magpies, after they were comfortably beaten by Essendon last weekend.

“We will get their best tomorrow night,” King said.

“They probably would have been disappointed last week with the way they played, so we are expecting their best pressure and their best defensive game.

“We are preparing for them at their best, a team that has done it all before and a team that matches up really well against us.

“These two clubs have great games, so hopefully it is a packed MCG and we will need to be at our best to match them.”
