Geelong notched their 200th win in V/AFL history at the MCG on Friday night, so let’s take a look back at the key stats from the Cats long history at the venue.

Geelong at the MCG: 200 Wins – 1 Draw – 163 Losses 

·         55% Win Rate – Fourth Highest of any team in V/AFL history 

·         103 of the 364 total games have been finals 

·         The Cats have scored over 100 points in 135 games 

The Cats played in the first ever official VFL game at the MCG, when they took on Melbourne in 1897.   

Geelong’s Biggest Win at the MCG 

Geelong’s biggest win at the venue came in 1989, when the Cats crushed Richmond by 134 points on the back of a brilliant display from a certain star forward.  

Gary Ablett Senior booted 14 goals and picked up 30 disposals in one of the greatest individual performances, as the Cats piled on 32 goals and 51 scoring shots against the Tigers.  

The final margin still stands as the tenth biggest win in MCG history, while Geelong’s total (211) is also their fifth highest score in the club’s history.  

 The Leading Goalkicker 

It’s not hard to guess that Gary Ablett Senior was one of Geelong’s best performers at the MCG. 

Ablett Sr kicked 14 goals on two different occasions at the G’, holding the record for most goals in a single game at the venue alongside John Longmire.  

It is also the most goals any Geelong player has kicked in a single game, with Ablett also kicking 10 goals on six different occasions.
