Following Geelong’s draw with Footscray on Saturday, the VFL Cats now sit in fourth position on the ladder with just three matches remaining.

The Cats went on an eight game winning streak through the middle of the season, putting them in a prime position to reach September action.

Werribee have opened a small gap on top of the ladder, but there is only six points separating second position down to seventh in a tightly packed race for the postseason.

The Finals Format

The VFL competition is rolling with a top ten finals series for the second straight season, including a wildcard round the week before September to open the postseason.

Under this format, sides that finish from seventh to tenth square off in the wildcard round, vying for a place in the final eight with the top six teams getting the weekend off.

Once the final eight is locked in, the VFL finals series proceeds in a traditional fashion similar to the AFL setup, with the top four sides earning a second chance in the opening week.

Geelong’s Current Standing

The VFL Cats currently sit in fourth position on the ladder (10-4-1) following the draw with the Bulldogs, the two points keeping them clear of Southport in fifth.

Geelong have won two of their last five games, but their two losses in that period were by one and two points along with the draw against Footscray.

Still holding a strong percentage (127.5%), the Cats have almost locked in finals action but can still finish anywhere from second position down to tenth depending on results.

The Run Home

With four rounds remaining, the Cats have three games and one bye week before the Wildcard weekend in the final week of August.

Geelong will kick off their run home this weekend when they travel to Arden Street, taking on North Melbourne who currently sit in the 13th place on the ladder.

The Kangaroos have dropped two of their past three games, holding the worst percentage of any team in the top 16 positions on the ladder after a number of big losses.

After their bye week in round 19, the Cats return home for a clash with Carlton at GMHBA Stadium in the penultimate week of the home and away season.

Geelong faced the Blues in round five this year recording an enormous 101-point win, with Carlton currently sitting in 19th position with just three wins for the season.

The final round of the season will see Geelong travel to Sandringham for a clash with the Zebras, another team they have already defeated this season by 15 points in round 14.

Sandringham are fighting for a place in finals, currently sitting in 11th on the ladder but have only won one of their last six games.

With a favourable draw and no games left against a top 10 side, the Cats can cement their position in the top four and earn themselves a double chance.
