With their 2004 season back on track after five wins in six weeks, the Cats hosted North Melbourne at Kardinia Park in another important clash in Round 12.

Geelong led at every change but struggled to put the final nail in the coffin, before two final quarter goals from Gary Ablett Junior sealed the win.

Dashing David Wojcinski collected three Brownlow Votes for his 23 disposal performance, while Gary Ablett Jr and Andrew Mackie both chipped in with a three goal haul.

The Cats 2004 season got off to a rocky start, only winning one of their opening five games before finding momentum heading into the clash with the Kangaroos.

North Melbourne jumped out of the blocks with the first four majors, before Andrew Mackie flipped momentum for the Cats with three goals in a seven minute period.

Geelong turned a 24 point deficit into a 19 point lead 10 minutes into the second quarter, but the Kangaroos mounted another charge to cut the margin to three points at half time.

North Melbourne reclaimed the lead in the third term, but three late goals from the Cats, including a pair of 60 metre bombs from Ben Graham and Josh Hunt, gave the Cats a handy 15 point buffer heading into the final break.

Some Gary Ablett magic slammed the door shut in the final term, with two goals from the little master helping the Cats hang on to a 10 point win.

The victory over North Melbourne set the Cats up for a big back half of the season, which saw them finish fourth on the ladder and charge to a Preliminary Final.
