Jack Henry said the decision to remain in the Hoops was a simple one, after the Cats announced the star defender had signed a five-year contract extension on Monday.

With 140 AFL games under his belt already, Henry has been rewarded for a strong 2024 campaign with a new deal which will see him remain at the club until at least the end of 2029.

Henry has not missed a game this year while ranking in the top 20 across the competition for intercept marks, spoils and intercept possessions.

The star defender said the thought of leaving didn’t cross his mind, when he spoke to media on Tuesday.

“It was a very easy decision, and I didn't really consider any other options, I was always going to stay at Geelong and I am stoked to have it all done now,” Henry said.

“It probably hasn't necessarily sunk in just yet, the whole idea of being here another five years but it is a really nice thing to have that security.

“I think it is really good that we have got some guys that will be here for a long time.

“It is good that you know you will have certain people who are going to be around in the future, hopefully we keep tracking nicely.”

2024 has been a brilliant campaign by Henry, particularly after two years which saw him battle through recurring injuries.

The defender missed 10 weeks in the 2022 season before returning to feature in the Cats Premiership but was struck down again early in 2023 and managed only 11 games.

Henry said it has been exciting to get back out into the thick of the action this year, a welcome reward for pushing through a difficult period.

“It was a hard time for sure,” Henry said.

“I think you rarely go through a career and not find yourself having a few difficult periods.

“Coming off a pretty decent stint in rehab, I was pretty happy to be back playing and I was trying to find good consistency on the footy field to let everything take care off the field.

“The footy club were great in terms of helping me deal with everything, so that was almost an added bonus with this contract they have given me.

“It is nice that they have done that for me, especially with everything else they have done.”
