Cats cannot lean on Hawkins
Chris Scott says the Cats can't afford to leave it all up to Tom Hawkins
GEELONG'S heavy reliance on Tom Hawkins is a concern for coach Chris Scott at the halfway stage of the season.
The big Cat has lacked support in Geelong's forward line in the opening 12 rounds.
Hawkins has booted 32 goals, with versatile star Jimmy Bartel the next best Cat with 14.
That duo also lead the Cats for marks inside 50m.
Hawkins has snared an equal League-best 46 compared to Bartel's 19.
Speaking on Talking Footy on Monday night, Chris Scott admitted Hawkins has shouldered too much of the load in attack.
"The short answer's yes. But even the very best teams rely on their best players," he said.
Scott was quick to point out that injuries had limited the Cats' tall forward options.
Daniel Menzel, Nathan Vardy, Mitch Brown and Shane Kersten have all battled injury.
"We'd (planned to) sort of throw it open and see which one of them performed the best," Scott said.
"Now they've all been injured. So we played Josh Walker - he was OK on the weekend - but we're still very open-minded as to what our best look in there is.
"You could say that that's a problem, but it's also an opportunity isn't it? We're 8-3 at the half-way mark and we're miles away from getting our best forward group together."
Scott revealed he has been tinkering with Geelong's game plan and believes if the Cats don't improve "we're just in the middle of the pack".
"But I would also say, especially to our supporters, if we get it right and we play our best footy I'm confident we can beat anyone on any day," he added.
"Especially when the really important games come around."
Geelong escaped with a five-point win over Carlton on Friday night with controversy about free-kicks not paid to the Blues in the dying seconds dominating discussion the next day.
"My understanding of the way the umpires have been instructed this year is that they should guess less," he said.
"And I've heard it said that you shouldn't umpire the last 40 seconds of the game when the scores are level any differently to the first 40 seconds.
"I would argue slightly against that. I think it would be a disaster for the umpires to guess on a decision (and) make a mistake that costs a team the game."
Geelong will start overwhelming favourites to notch their ninth win when they host St Kilda at Simonds Stadium on Sunday.
