WHEN Geelong makes its pick in next month’s National Draft, it will likely be the first time the club has made a selection in the first round since it drafted Nakia Cockatoo in 2014.

With the club looking to strengthen its young playing stocks, AFL Media’s draft expert Cal Twomey has cast his eye over who could be in the frame.

Pick 12: Jackson Hately's form at senior level this year, as well as in the reserves at Central District, outlined his ability as a big midfielder. He is versatile and averaged 18 touches a game at senior SANFL level. He was named an All Australian forward after an impressive under-18 carnival.

Around the mark: Jordan Clark, Jye Caldwell, Ian Hill

It wasn't the best year for Ian Hill, but he remains one of the most talented players in the pool. The local prospect is lightning quick, can carry the ball from end to end, and has the skill to match his cheeky play. The cousin of Dockers pair Stephen and Bradley Hill had his season cut short by shoulder surgery.

Jordan Clark, a free-wheeling, smart, creative and classy half-back from Western Australia, has pushed himself into top-10 calculations through an excellent season.

Jye Caldwell's championships was ruined by a hamstring injury, which saw him miss five weeks of footy. But the tough midfielder returned at school level and immediately showed his class to recruiters, some of whom went to the game just to watch him play.

Caldwell is a tough, inside midfielder with a robust attitude and application to the game. He has the physicality to bust through and past players and should be seen as being in the best group of ball-winners available.
