Trav tracking for return
Cats premiership player Travis Varcoe is hoping that his luck will change this year
Varcoe spoke to the Age about his injury spell that had him out for the majority of 2012. Three months sidelined for a foot fracture at the start of 2012, was followed by another 8 weeks after reinjuring his foot during a training run.
''Everything's fine in there now, but you still have those few questions,'' Varcoe said.
''I just need to get through the first two or three weeks, I reckon, and then I'll be fine. I think I've done my time. Hopefully my injury spell is over for a while now.''
Varcoe has been left with a flexible screw in his foot, which will stay in there for as long as it needs to for security purposes.
Varcoe also spoke of how his two younger teammates, Daniel Menzel and Josh Cowan, who were also in rehab recovering from injury, inspired him everyday and helped him to form a positive outlook.
''They came in every day and said: 'OK, what have you got for me?' They were doing the best they could, every day, and it got me thinking: geez, I can't complain if they're not. It had a pretty big impact on me.''
Varcoe said that he didn’t let himself be beaten by disappointment, despite his third encounter during round 22, when he damaged ligaments in his foot half way through the first quarter.
''I just thought, 'you know what, I'm disappointed, but how can I help the boys?' It made me watch the other players, and look at who was playing my spot, and try and help them with it. I didn't want them being sad for me. I wanted someone to take my spot, so that I could be fighting now to get it back.''
